A discussion on the course of instruction design based on disparities between L1 and L2 structures were subsequently presented where the author identified that the most unmanageable phase was learning crucial elements in the target language that were absolutely absent in the learners native language. Therefore, various guidelines and contributions were presented for syllabus design and proposed development on the complexity of the second language was appropriately delved into. Accordingly, the author noted that recent findings from lingua franca research suggest several ways in which attention to certain aspects of traditional approaches to syllabus design-specifically, L1 transfer and L2 complexity-can be used in selecting, sequencing, and grading items for the syllabus (Pica, 1984, p. 700).The article is most useful for teachers in the development and design of effective syllabus considering disparities and complexities in interlanguage instructions and learning. Through the guidelines provided in the discourse for syllabus design from the noted cross-linguistic research, educators are illumined on instructional approaches and methods that would facilitate teaching a second language more

Therefore, this will mean that all the ministers that establish the cabinet are responsible for any arrangements that have been performed in relation to running of the government. This system fundamentally tries to show the faith in the whole government as a whole in reservation day to day decisions. Collective ministerial responsibility simply implies that the government will collectively bill to the parliament for the polices, performs and any decisions that they pass. However, the idea of collective responsibility means that for any decision or action to be made, all the members of the coalition must come into an agreement. This may slow down the government peculiarly in instances where the two parties fail to come to an agreement. The government will be at a standstill. tho at the end of the idea, the fact remains that collective decision making is favorable because it is more seeming that better decisions will be reached and the decisions will mostly have the citizens best interest at heart.Collective responsibility is easy to maintain in a coalition government where the Prime Minister is kept as the keystone of the entire government. This is however not always the case. This is happens as there are instances when the coalition government is formed into a single party government. However, currently, people are highly enlightened, which makes collective responsibility a problem in some instances. structured Sentencing in North Carolina - Essay Example little severe crimes that do not involve victim automobile trunk injury or threat to body injury is assigned lowest classes composition crimes involving victim injury is assigned highest classes. Misdemeanor crimes ar classify in to four categories ( social class AI, Class I, Class 2 and Class 3). Class AI is the most stern while Class 3 is the least serious misdemeanor crime (Tonry 86). Structured sentencing is based on several core tenets. One of the principles is rationality of the sentence. The sentencing should consider the severity of the hatred as indicated by the disablement suffered by the victim and also the criminal record of the wrongdoer. Another principle is truthfulness. Early parole releases should be avoided since the jail term should be closed related to the sentence natterd by the courts. Another principle of structured sentencing is consistency. The sentence received by offenders with similar ante cedent criminal record and convicted for the same offense should be the same. The last principle is resource prioritization (North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory missionary station 3). The sentencing should be accompanied by adequate prison and community-based resources. Prisons and jail terms should take priority for violent crimes or repeat offenders while community-based rehabilitation programs should first be utilized for the non-violent crimes, and for offenders with no prior criminal record (Tonry 86). Felon offenses are classified in to six prior record levels starting from Level I for offenders with no prior criminal conviction to Level VI for severe felonies involving violence and numerous prior criminal records, and convictions (Tonry 89). Structured sentencing in North Carolina has three sentencing levels. The levels include the active sentencing that involve jail terms, intermediate sentencing that involve manage probation and community sentencing that may inv olve community service, restitution and fines. Active sentencing is done for high offense classes and felonies with numerous prior records. Judges may impose active, community penalization or intermediate punishment for convictions of Class AI misdemeanors regardless of the past criminal record. Class 1, 2 and 3 misdemeanors, the Judge may impose a community punishment regardless of the prior criminal history (North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission 8). Offenders serving a jail term of more than 90 days are incarcerated at the landed estate prison system while those serving less than 90 days of jail term, are incarcerated in County jail system (Tonry 73). Intermediate punishment requires the offenders to undergo manage probation. The first type of intermediate punishment is the split sentence, whereby the convict will serve a jail term followed and later undergo supervised probation (Tonry 85). Another type is the Electronic house arrest whereby the convicted off ender will be confined in one area and monitored through the use of computer technology. The third type is intensive supervision where the convicted offender is closely supervised and monitored. The fourth type is the residential center, which is a extremely structured program requiring all-night residence of the convicted offender. Another type of intermediate punishment is the Day reporting center, this involve a highly structured and close supervision program during the day and in

This concept was said to depend on Darwinism concept of survival of the fittest for the fittest, where primitive political and economic conditions of the frontier shad to evolve into complex city life.Frederick Turners American identity epitomizes Manifest Destiny from the perspective of Anglo-Americans. This is attributed to the fact that Turner describes Americans as strong in individualisation and selfishness, with nervous energy, coarseness and strength, and inherent expansive power. In his research, Turner established that the selfish and individual qualities lineament of Anglo-Americans forced them to push westward thus, claiming land an d expanding democracy. The terms are extremely important in the US history. Given that the society is made of culture and organized religion, it can be concluded that there is an existing relationship between material culture and religion. As examined in this article, religion might be impoverished by ignoring the material aspect of culture (Smart 1998, p. 51).Culture is used by people in the society to refer to symbols, customs and habits of a given group of people in the society. It is also used in some cases to depict things passed on from one generation to the other in the society. material culture is a term employed in the description of the archeological artifacts of the society. Culture is specifiable to the behaviors and actions of the members of a society. For instance, the Irish culture could be said to be determine by their language focus and religion, which is Catholic. Therefore, other things in the society such as language, beliefs, norms and symbolism could also identify culture (Foucault & Carrette (1999, p. 86).Material culture involves material things and symbols used in a given society. The material things include artifacts that are archeologically identified and utilized for various purposes as identified by the society. Some of the materials culture identified with some cultures includes the homes that people live in, businesses, churches and Penticton. On the contrary, to the material culture, non-material culture may also include the values of people and ethical motive apart from the language, norms and symbols as indicated earlier. The physical substances representing culture do not work alone and require non-material culture. For instance, visual perception objects does not make meaning unless one reads and understands the meaning of the object, something facilitated using language (Smart 1998, p. 75).The examination of

However, economists can be attracted to sports for reasons that are different from those of the spectators. To economists they see sports as an industry with the efficiency to illust regularise the economic principles in an attractive and interesting way. Over the years the labor aspect of the sports industry has gradually grown to become to a greater extent and more complex (Burk 173). It has gotten to a place when been involved in professional sports without commercializing it is no longer attractive. This trend can be illustrated by the way soccer teams globally have to spend more on their players in site to make sure that they attract more fans which will result to more income. If a team chooses not to spend more in order to hire the best players in the market, they will be competitively disadvantaged making them less attractive. translate and demand of labor are aspects that should be keenly observed in any industry, especially during these eld of economic hardships and uncertainty. This applies to the sports industry. It is important to note that the demand for labor in the sports industry can influence that rate of payment for human labor. The payment can also vary in terms of individual mobility, racial discrimination, personal productivity, and availability of substitutes. Property rights can affect the supply of sports talent. Collective agreements like payroll caps, abandon order drafts, and revenue sharing can be used to control such forces (Rosner and Shropshire 137).Under regulation

Labor & Management Relations Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Labor & Management relations - Research Paper ExampleAs for employees, the job market in the linked States has been turned spinning top down in the last couple of years, as a major result of the economic garboil facing the country (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2011), the average unemployment rate across the United States remained steady for February and March 2011 at an estimated 8.8%. Thus, while working for a company like Wal-Mart may non be ideal, it may be one of the few forms of employment that many Americans are able to doctor under the current economic circumstances facing the country today (Glasmeier, 2006). Unfortunately, the retailer is taking manifest advantage of the desperation of customers and employees. In remaining a major force in the retail industry, gaining major power through the economic crisis on multiple levels, the actual costs behind its low prices are by all odds not a part of the organizations publi cized marketing strategy (MSNBC, 2005). ... These customers do not need to be made to feel badly about their shopping experience, Wal-Mart has an opportunity that they are flunk to realize. At this point, they have a massive market share, which will most likely return to what it was precedent to the 2008 economic collapse, in the next couple of years when the economy bounces back from its brief devastation base on historical data (Microsoft, 2011). However, without implementing a training program that drives customer loyalty through employee satisfaction, Wal-Mart has the potential difference to lose their significant gain, to competitors like Target, when unemployment rates are down and the economy is booming once once more (Microsoft, 2011). Thus, this paper will examine the many reports of federal law violations and unacceptable human beings rights standards to which the big-box retailer has bring forth accustomed in its time of economic prosper and impermanent power. Accor ding to Cram (2005), In 2002, 43 distinct charges were filed against Wal-Mart for violations of the National Labor dealing Act and since 1995, 60 complaints have been filed against Wal-Mart with the National Labor Relations Board. In response to these charges, this paper will also recommend implementation of a training bear that will ultimately help to improve the image of Wal-Mart in the eyes of its most important assets, its human resources. Assessment The number of employee complaints and lawsuits against Wal-Mart for its poor, and in some cases illegal, employment and employee relations practices that have been steadily rising end-to-end the past decade, makes this problem worthy of addressing particularly at the local level where managers have

Physics Essay Example for Free

Physics EssayA thermometric keeping is a physical place that changes in a known way with temperature, and can therefore be used to measure temperature. The substance used as a thermometer must ingest a property that varies proportionally / linearly with temperature. In other words When objects be heated or cooled, their temperatures change, along with intimately of their properties, these properties argon known as Thermometric Properties. Two commonly used thermometric properties are confrontation and length. 2. Water is generally used to coiffure the bushel f firster on a thermometer. The fixed points are freezing point (32oF/0oC) and turn point (212oF/100oC). Upper fixed point is the temperature of pure water boiling at normal atmospheric pressure. Lower fixed point is the temperature of a mixture of pure sparkler and pure water at normal atmospheric pressure. Generally the upper and lower fixed points of a thermometer are determined with considering the freezing point and boiling point of water. In Celsius thermometer, lower fixed point is 0 ? C and upper fixed point is 100 ? C, in Fahrenheit thermometer lower fixed point is determined as 32.They need no power source. Disadvantages If it so happens that the thermometer falls and breaks, a exuviate of mercury in a doctors office, school or home environment poses significant health hazards. video could result in serious damage to kidneys, lungs, brain, heart and immune system. Digital Thermometers Digital thermometers use thermocouples or thermistors to sense the change in temperature and display the temperature on a digital display. There are a number of several(predicate) types of digital thermometers therefore the temperature ranges vary. Advantages Digital thermometers are easy to use. When using a digital thermometer you wont be exposed to mercury. Disadvantages Dead batteries are a drawback of digital thermometers. It is hard to determine how much power is left in a digital thermomete rs battery, which in turn makes it difficult to yell when it will die. Because they are specialized batteries, it is hard to locate replacements. And close-to-dying batteries will provide inaccurate readings. outdoor(a) Thermometers Outdoor thermometers are used to measure the temperature of the surrounding air. Temperature ranges from -58of/-50oc to 158of/ 70oC. Advantages Low battery consumption. High stability and accuracy.Disadvantages If an object is well close to the outdoor thermometer it can influence the actual temperature of the surrounding air. Thermocouple Thermometer A thermocouple thermometer is a device for measuring temperature consisting of a pair of wires of different metals or semiconductors joined at both ends. angiotensin converting enzyme junction is at the temperature to be measured, the second at a fixed temperature. The electromotive force generated depends upon the temperature difference. Temperature ranges from 200oC to 2,600oC. Advantages It is very responsive to rapidly changing temperatures due to its low thermal capacity. The low thermal capacity is due to its low mass and metals are good conductors of electricity. As the output is an electrical impulse it can be committed to a suit satisfactory electrical equipment for checking rapid or sudden temperature changes. Disadvantages It is extremely expensive. Generates low signal which is non-linear must be assembled with care to avoid considerable noise levels. II. thermic refinement Thermal expansion is the drift of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. When a substance is heated, its particles begin moving more and thus usually maintain a greater ordinary separation.Materials which contract with increasing temperature are rare this effect is modified in size, and only occurs within limited temperature ranges. The degree of expansion divided by the change in temperature is called the materials coefficient of thermal expansion and generally var ies with temperature. 1. Thermal Expansion of Solids Heating a solid makes it particles vibrate vigorously. As these vibrations become bigger the molecules are pushed supercharge apart and the solid expands slightly in al watchfulnesss. Thermal Expansion of Liquids Like solid liquids besides expand on heating.Since liquids do not have a definite shape they can have only volume expansion. Since the container containing liquid also expands with heat therefore Real Expansion = Apparent Expansion + Expansion in a liquid of liquid of Container . When a liquid is heated in a container, the container expands first and therefore the level of liquid decreases since the expansion of liquid is more than that of solid, therefore after erstwhile(prenominal) the liquid expands and its level increases. The lava lamp above illustrates the differential thermal expansion in liquids. Thermal Expansion of Gases A gas expands when heated and condenses when cooled.Charles Law predicts a four-fold decr ease in the volume of a gas that is cooled from get on temperature to the temperature of liquid nitrogen (77 K). If the gas inside the aviate condenses into a volatile liquid at or around 77 K, the volume change will be even larger. Removing the balloon exposes the cold balloon to higher temperatures. The resulting thermal expansion fills the balloon to its original size again. Liquid nitrogen or dry-ice/dimethyl ketone is poured over a balloon. 2. Thermal Expansion Real-life applications Engine Coolant Another example of thermal expansion on the part of a liquid can be found inside the cars radiator. If the radiator is topped off with coolant on a cold day, an increase in temperature could very well cause the coolant to expand until it overflows. In the past, this produced a problem for car owners, because car engines released the excess volume of coolant onto the ground, requiring periodic replacement of the wandering. Later-model cars, however, have an overflow container to h oard up fluid released as a result of volume expansion. As the engine cools down again, the container returns the excess fluid to the radiator, thus, recycling it. This means that newer cars are much less prone to overheating as older cars. combine with improvements in radiator fluid mixtures, which act as antifreeze in cold weather and coolant in hot, the recycling dish out has led to a significant decrease in breakdowns related to thermal expansion. Building Settlement altogether pipes and vessels expand and contract in direct proportion to a temperature change. Whenever pipes are routed across structural deed joints in buildings, roads, bridges etc. , they will be subjected to displacements. Expansion amp building settlement products are installed to control this thermally induced expansion and contraction, and pipe attempts caused by structural settlement.Pipe Solutions are able to offer technical advice or a full design, for any expansion or building movement problem. Expan sion Joints are used to physically compensate for the movements of the pipework. They can be designed to suit almost any combination of working temperature, pressure and movement capability. 3. The Design of a Bimetallic Strip A bimetallic impoverish is used to convert a temperature change into mechanical displacement. The strip consists of two strips of different metals which expand at different rates as they are heated, usually steel and copper, or in some cases brass instead of copper. The strips are joined together throughout their length by riveting, brazing or welding. The different expansions force the prone strip to bend one way if heated, and in the opposite direction if cooled below its initial temperature. The metal with the higher coefficient of thermal expansion is on the outer side of the cut down when the strip is heated and on the inner side when cooled. The sideways displacement of the strip is much larger than the small lengthways expansion in either of the two m etals. This effect is used in a range of mechanical and electrical devices. In some applications the bimetal strip is used in the flat form. In others, it is wrapped into a coil for compactness. Euro Crisis Essay Example for Free

Euro Crisis EssayThe ability of Euro zone countries (countries in Europe that use the common land currency called the Euro) to borrow in a common currency poses free-passenger problems because there may be an incentive to bailout countries that borrow excessively. How does the accredited protrude of the Euro attempt to manoeuvre this incentive to over-borrow by some countries? The free rider problem refers to when someone is capturing the full benefit of an action while shifting the cost to others. The free-rider problem construct into the euro lies into the fiscal structure, since the countries were fiscally undisciplined and also governments were gaining political gain running shortages supported by their euro confederate nations. Over borrowing occurred due to the incentive of governments to borrow in a common currency to address this issue the captain design had to solutions. One was the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) which limited budget deficit to up to 3% of GDP and 60% of stock of public debt, aiming to ensure fiscal discipline where if a member state was in an excessive deficit situation then the council could impose sanctions. The Second dominate is a no bailout clause stating that community shall not be liable for the debt of governments (with some exceptions) The original design of the euro sought to address the over-borrowing. Why were the measures in the original Euro design insufficient in preventing the Euro monarch butterfly debt problems? outgrowth it is important to point out that the sovereign debt crisis is significantly tied to the banking crisis and macroeconomic crisis through the entire euro commonwealth. The original measure was insufficient because in a way these measures actually worsen the crisis. The sovereign debt crisis can be divided in three phases pre-crisis period, the financial and sovereign debt crisis and post-crisis recovery. The initial design affected the pre-crisis since in candor it increased fiscal r isk due to the increased in the current account imbalances across the euro area and also the dispersion in credit boom, housing prices and sectorial debt levels. Then, during the crisis 2007-2008 the original design actually augment the fiscal impact since the global financial shock had diverse impacts across the euro area and policies were focus on European Central Bank to address the financial shock, not accounting these policies prompted a worse euro sovereign debt crisis (Especially countries with macro-imbalances). Thirdly, the original measures slowed down the post-crisis recovery period because the stated estrictions of deficit and debt made the recovery stretched, along with the miserable political management of countries institutions to solve factors involving the crisis. What are the new reforms to address sovereign debt concerns? What makes the new measures superior to the original ones? The new reforms to address the sovereign debt is compounded on a treaty called Fisca l Compact accord which requires new fiscal principles to be pose in each country (Jan 2013). These fiscal reforms are establish on two principles avoid high public debt since its a threat to fiscal stability.Second, the fiscal balance has to be close to zero. The improvement is a structural budget balance less than 1% of GDP when debt is below 60%. Also the country that has higher public debt (off the limit) will have to excoriate the issue with a timeline. Though this reform is a little more efficient than the original, it still has study implementation problems since it requires adjustments on forecast errors for the structural budget balance. Also its difficult to accurately authority the ability of governments to identify and tackle down excessive imbalances.

An Analysis of the Cadastral Systems Essay Example for Free

An Analysis of the Cadastral establishments EssayThere is no prescribed organisational structure to these states, and province validation is a state government responsibility (Dalrymple, Williamson, W all in allace, 2003). The southwestward Australia travel was passed in 1834, allowing the Crown to establish wizard or more colonies in the south-west of what was thence upstart mho Wales however it wasnt until 1836 that Australia became a political entity of Britain (Painter, 2012). Not long after, unsanded Zea soil became a British colony through the cuting of the treaty of Waitangi in 1840, which proclaimed British Sovereignty over the land. The cadasters in New Zealand and Australia serve a akin primary function of release and tranfering title to land, as well as the registration of any interests relating to land (Cadastral Template, 2003). Having both developed from similar roots many similarities exist between the cadastral trunks of New Zealand and reciprocal ohm Australia, but as the individual countries endure matured over years, and changes have occurred within Australia, so to have differences developed between the cadastral systems. This essay seeks to analyse the differences and similarities that exist between the cadastral systems of New Zealand and to the south Australia. As both New Zealand and southmost Australia were settled by the British they both adopted a deeds registration system as their initial method of registering rights in land. The Deeds Registration System was based upon the common justice rule that No man could confer better title then he had (Hinde, 1971). It was an expensive, time consuming, and complex system that required deeds to be registered, so that title could be derived.Due to the law that allowed only equal title to be passed on, should a previous deed be invalid for whatever reason, all subsequent dealings were also made invalid. In the mid 1850s Robert Torrens, the Registrar-General of Deeds, intr oduced his system of land transfer to South Australia, which simplified the flawed system, and provided better security of title (Weir, 2007). The Torrens system was introduced into judicial statute through the fugitive of the Real Property Act 1858 (SA). The other states followed suit, adopting this improved system, by termi earth of their own acts, as did New Zealand, when it passed the inflict Transfer Act 1870.The most important linguistic rule of this new system was that registration provides title, and upon registration a registered owner of a fee simple title is granted an indefeasible title, providing the transfer was bona fide (Hinde, 1971). Whilst one of the purposes of the Real Property Act 1858 and the Land Transfer Act 1870 was to abolish the Deeds system, some small amounts of land owned under Deed exist in New Zealand and South Australia, these parcels argon usually limited as to parcels or title, and in South Australia the strike to this as the Old System.A maj orhisorical difference between the developments of the cadastral systems in New Zealand and South Australia atomic number 18 the considerations given to native or aboriginal title. When the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in1840 Maori ownership of their land and properties was recognised. As a acknowledgment of Maoris relationship with the land, customary rights were provided for in the Treaty, which was later converted into Maori Freehold title through the Maori Land Court. However when Australia was settled the land was considered terra nullis and so soverigenty was proclaimed for the Crown, with no consideration given for the aboriginies. It was not until the passing of the Indigenous Natives Act in 1993 that any legal consideration was given to and aborigninal land rights. The Cadastral aspect Act 2002 and the Survey Act 2002 are similar pieces of legislation created by New Zealand and South Australia repectively. They are both concerned with promoting and maintaining the accurac y of the cadastre through the liscencing and registration of surveyors, and the the setting of standards. Both of these Acts require a Surveyor-General to be appointed as a statutory officer to oversee the cadastre, and this position is liable for the spacial integrity of the cadastre (ICSM, 2011). The Cadastal Survey Act also setouts the functions of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), of which the Surveyor-General is a component, as well as detailing his other major role, to set the standards which cadstral surverys must abide by. In South Australia however, this later role is undertaken by the Minister for Infrastructure under legislation which has been administered by the Surveyor-General (ICSM, 2011).The integrity of the cadastre is checked through the auditing of lodged plans by liscenced or registered surveyors. In New Zealand this is a function of the Surveyor-General, delegated to a radical within LINZ. South Australia operates a slightly different system however with t he Surveyor-General responsible for field audits whilst the Register-General is responsible for office audits (ICSM, 2011). Before any plan is registered it is subject to a role check but on that point is some variation to the method which this is done.In New Zealand thither is both an automatic checking system, as surgical incision of LINZs validation process, as well as a manual check list for items to effortful to automate (ICSM, 2011). South Australia utilises a two tier system, with checks being made on items deemed critical for issuing title or retaining the integrity of the cadastre. A complete check is made on the critical items on Non Endoresed Plans (relating to the old system) and 7% of Endorsed Plans, with the remaining plans receiving a basic check (ICSM, 2011).Another way through which the dependableness of the cadastre is maintained is that all practising cadastral surveyors in New Zealand and South Australia are required to be liscened. In New Zealand liscencing is the responsibility of the Cadastral Surveyors Liscencing Board, with the most common method of gaining a liscence achieved by passing the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS) examinations associated with the cadastral component of their membership (CSLB, 2012).In South Australia this is the responsibility of the Surveyors Board of South Australia who conduct their own examinations, and this board also provides the option to become a registered surveyor for non cadastral work similarly (ICSM, 2011). Licenced surveyors are the only people who dissolve legally sign a cadastral survey, although the do not have completed all the work themselves. In New Zealand there is no restraint on who can do the wor,k or the level of supervision required. In South Australia however, it is expected that graduates allow receive adequate supervision from a licenced cadastral surveyor until they are competent, and those who have no pertinent training should always be supervised (ICSM, 2011). Although there is no specification for supervision in New Zealand it is common practice for a similar approach to South Australia to be taken, as the liscenced surveyor is responsible for everything that they sign until they are no longer liscenced or have deceased, and so they will want to be received everything is being done correctly.New Zealand and Australia both maintain an integrated cadastral system. In New Zealand there is a single registry known as Landonline that combines the spatial and textual components associated with the cadastre. The Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB) plays an springy role to surveyors and other land professionals in New Zealand, as it serves as a index of all lodged survey data, has a spatial view of parcels, determines the extents of electoral boundaries, and aids in the validation of lodged surveyed (ICSM, 2011).Survey data for approximately 70% of the parcels in the republic have been captured from live survey plans to improve the quality of the existing DCDB. Points that meet the accuracy requirements are given Survey- high-fidelity Digital Cadastre (SDC) status, which is used to validate new surveys, as well as being a vital tool for surveyors as it assures them of the data accuracy, and simplifies boundary definition. (Haanen Sutherland, 2002). The cadastre in New Zealand is not a legally coordinate cadastre, but can be considered to be a geodesic cadastre. This is due to the strong connection between the cadastral network and the geodetic network. Whenever the geodetic control marks are readjusted following resurvey, deformation, or addition of new or more accurate survey data, readjustment is required to the cadastre too as it connects to this dynamic network (LINZ, 2009). The integrated cadastre in South Australia is split into two adjourn components, a textual component compromising of legal and fisical information, and a spatial coponent which contains the DCDB and boundaries of the land parcels. These two comp nents are linked by unique identifiers associated with parcels, points, boundaries, and polygons (Toms, Williiamson, Grant, 1988). The South Australian DCDB is purely a spatial index and used for a mapping tool. The DCDB does not contain the quality of survey accurate data that New Zealands does, as only around 19% of parcels have surveyed dimensions that can be captured into the dataset (ICSM, 2011).The South Australian cadastre has been undergoing reform, as the cadastral system in Australia consisted of isolated surveys, which were not all on the same referenced to the same network, and effort is being made to coordinate these into a combined dataset. South Australia, by working from the part to the whole (the opposite of the traditional survey concept) is lamentable to adopt a risey coordinated cadastre that is survey accurate (Cadastral Template, 2003). One of the fundamental elements of a modern cadastre is that all information in the cadastre should be public (Toms, Willii amson, Grant, 1988).In New Zealand the DCDB is not directly comingible by the public, as users have to have a licence to access Landonline, although there is some provision of data to third parties by Land Information New Zeland. normal generally have to go through a licenced surveyor or solicitor in put up to get access to data in the cadastre. South Australia has a slightly better provision for the public, enable a view only version of the cadastre available (ICSM, 2011).It is important to not grant full access however, to prevent any unlicenced users from tampering with the cadastre and ruining its integrity. As Australia and New Zealand are very closely related countries it is not unexpected that the cadastral systems present within each nation are quite similar, especially both cadastres serve the same purpose of recording the transfer of land ownership and registering rights in land. The roots of their cadastral systems are traceable right back to the common law inherited rom Britain which has been the foundation for all legal matters in the two countries. However being separate countries, and South Australia having its own jurisdiction over its cadaster, variations do exist as the cadastres have evolved to meet the requirements of the country or state. The major differences existing between the cadastral is the integrated digital cadastre that is present in New Zealand, whilst it is still separated in South Australia, and the levels that the DCDBs vary between the places.

The collapse of Enron Essay Example for Free

The collapse of Enron riseThe collapse of Enron seems to be rooted in a combination of the failure of top leadership, a bodily culture that supported unethical behavior, and the complicity of the investment banking community. In the aftermath of Enrons bankruptcy filing, numerous Enron executives were aerated with criminal acts, including fraud, money laundering, and insider trading. Ben Glisan, Enrons former treasurer, was charged with two-dozen counts of money laundering, fraud, and conspiracy.During the plea negotiations, Glisan described Enron as a house of cards. Andrew Fastow, Jeff Skilling, and Ken Lay be among the most notable top-level executives implicated in the collapse of Enrons house of cards. Andrew Fastow, former Enron chief financial officer (CFO), faced 98 counts of money laundering, fraud, and conspiracy in connection with the improper partnerships he ran, which included a Brazilian power intendt project and a Nigerian power plant project that was aided by Merrill Lynch, an investment banking firm. 2.How did the top leadership at Enron undermine the foundation determine of the Enron Code of Ethics? Enrons ethics code was based on respect, integrity, communication, and excellence. Kenneth Lay, former chairman and (CEO) of Enron Corp. , once quoted as saying I was fully exposed to not single legal behavior but lesson and ethical behavior and what that means from the standpoint of leading organizations and bulk. In an introductory statement to the revised Enron Code of Ethics issued in July 2000, Lay wrote As officers and employees of Enron Corp. Its subsidiaries, and its affiliated companies, we are responsible for conducting the product line affairs of the companies in accordance with all applicable laws and in a moral and honest manner. Lay went on to indicate that the 64-page Enron Code of Ethics reflected policies approved by the companys board of directors and that the company, which enjoyed a reputation for being fair an d honest, was highly respected.Enrons ethics code likewise specified that An employee shall not conduct himself or herself in a manner which directly or indirectly would be detrimental to the best interests of the Company or in a manner which wouldbring to the employee financial gain separately derived as a direct consequence of his or her employment with the Company. 3. How did Enrons incorporate culture promote unethical decisions and actions? Enron has been described as having a culture of arrogance that led people to believe that they could handle increasingly greater risk without encountering any danger. According to Sherron Watkins, Enrons unspoken meat was, Make the numbers, make the numbers, make the numbersif you steal, if you cheat, just dont get caught. If you do, beg for a second chance, and youll get one. Enrons corporate culture did little to promote the values of respect and integrity. These values were undermined through the companys emphasis on decentralization, its employee procedure appraisals, and its compensation program. Each Enron division and business unit was kept separate from the others, and as a result very few people in the organization had a big picture perspective of the companys operations.Accompanying this emphasis on decentralization were insufficient operational and financial controls as well as a distracted, hands-off chairman, a compliant board of directors, and an impotent staff of accountants, auditors, and lawyers. Jeff Skilling implemented a very rigorous and threatening performance evaluation process for all Enron employees. Known as rank and yank, the annual process utilized confederate evaluations, and each of the companys divisions was arbitrarily forced to fire the lowest ranking one-fifth of its employees. Employees much ranked their peers lower in order to enhance their own positions in the company.Enrons compensation plan seemed oriented toward enriching executives rather than generating profits for shar eholders and encouraged people to break rules and inflate the value of contracts even though no actual cash was generated. Enrons bonus program encouraged the use of non-standard accounting practices and the high-sounding valuation of deals on the companys books. Indeed, deal inflation became widespread within the company as partnerships were created solely to hide losses and avoid the consequences of owning up to problems. (p29-31) Weiss, Joseph W. (2009). The Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle Essay Example for Free

The mottle Band by Arthur Conan Doyle EssayWhich is the better Detective legend, The Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle or Murder on the Orient press out by Agatha Christie? Detective stories go along as popular now as they bring on ever been. The fan base for detective stories is huge. This drive for the genre has contri merelyed to the large number of detective stories being broadcast on T. V. , but the stories almost unendingly originate from books, which have a far deeper history than the T. V series. Conan Doyle started to write his short stories about shamus Holmes in the 19th century. They were published in the Strand Magazine and were an immediate success, for the simple reason that in that location was very little for people to do in their spargon time other than read. Holmes fans enjoyed stories that could keep them socialise for a long time. Sherlock Holmes became so popular that when Conan Doyle tried to kill him off there was a public outcry and Conan Doyl e was forced to continue writing. In contrast Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie is a more modern story set in the early 1930s. The book is wiz of many following the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Many different T. V. series and some films have been make based on the books. Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes are alongside others such as Inspector Morse and miss Marple as the greatest fictional detectives ever. Conan Doyle uses an individual style in his writing using Holmess sidekick Dr. Watson as the narrator in the majority of his stories. This proves to be a good technique as Watsons viewpoint sewer communicate Holmes brilliance as a detective. This is what happens in the beginning paragraphs of The Speckled Band.Watson says that Holmes makes rapid deductions, as desist as intuitions but always on a logical basis. Doyle wants the reader to see the admiration Dr. Watson bears for Holmes and his abilities. Holmes is an eccentric. He can play the violin beautifull y but he is also a drug addict, a crack shot and fearless in a fight. At the start Watson describes the cases he has seen Holmes work on he says he has seen none commonplace which encourages you to read on as you feel guaranteed you will convey an sakeing story. The readers opinion of Holmes abilities is also raised.Watson says Holmes works for the love of his art rather than for the acquirement of wealth and evening Holmes states my profession is my reward, making him bet far more righteous as he solves crime for his interest in the problem and not for financial reasons. Hercule Poirot is similar in this way. He says I have do enough money to satisfy both my needs and my caprices and I only take such cases as interest me. Poirot is a small man with an egg shaped head who does not have the strong-arm energy of Holmes in fact his technique is thinking out the truth. He has a large moustache and a pink pointy nose and looks like the sort of person you can never take seriously. P oirots stories are written in the third person so compliments and admiration about him have to be spoken by other characters, which is not as effective as when the sidekick narrates. Poirot does not have a constant companion he has new helpers in every book. In Murder on the Orient Express Poirot has two, a doctor and the managing director of the train he is on.They follow the same descriptor as Watson with Holmes, never working out the answers before the detective does. This is one of the techniques used to make him seem interesting. Another is to give a snippet of an interesting problem that Poirot has solved at the start of the story which immediately makes the reader trust in his abilities. Both characters have strong points from a writing perspective, but in a story, I think that Sherlock Holmes is the more interesting of the two because of his natural abilities.

Emily Dickinson Publication As Auction English Literature Essay

Emily Dickinson Publication As Auction English Literature EssayOne move that confounds readers of Emily Dickinsons poetry is why she was so reluctant to have her work seen in her actiontime. Not even up her family knew, until after her death, the extent of Dickinsons writing, that she had left behind 1,775 poems. Publication-is the Auction, poem 709, provides some insight into Dickinsons thinking. She compargons publication to an Auction / Of the bear in mind of Man (1-2), and not even poverty truly justifies it. To sell what has been given you and is only yours while you argon on Earth is like reducing the Human Spirit / To Disgrace of Price (15-16). In this poem, Dickinson equates the publication of poems to the selling of her self. Not publishing, then, is a form of self-preservation.When Dickinson writes in 709-Publication-is the Auction that it is better to avoid so fret a thing (4) and instead go White-Unto the White Creator (7), she compares her writing to Snow (8). She lets the reader know that publication represents a sullying of the Snow, a disgrace to what is divine and God-given (from the White Creator, who is himself pure). It is not only divinity contained in the poems, she argues, but also the Human Spirit (15). Although these are compelling reasons to guard against any adulteration of her work, these are not the only reasons Dickinson gives for not pursuing publication and the fame that (she feared?) might follow. In 1659-Fame is a quicksilver(a) food, she compares fame to an to a fault rich and ultimately unwholesome meal. Here, as often in Dickinsons poems, the birds are possessed of a knowledge that human beings do not have. The birds look at the crumbs of fame and Flap past it to the / Farmers Corn- / Men eat of it and fall in (8-10). Those birds are a stand-in for the poet, their song and her song, even their ironic caw, much her own. But Fame is a fickle food also speaks to a fear that fame would be transitory if it came at all. In poem 1763, quoted direct below in its entirety, she states succinctly Fame is a bee. / It has a song- / It has a sting- / Ah, too, it has a wing. It seems her emotions here are pathetic somewhere between longing and fear. And so the pull between publication (and the fame she seemed to believe would come with it) and the fruition of her work on her own terms remained a preoccupation. As she recounted to T. W. Higginson (Dickinsons friend and adviser, he was the editor of the Atlantic Monthly), there were the occasional calls from editors who wished to publish her work. She wrote and told him Two editors of journals came to my fathers ho drop this winter, and asked me for my mind, and when I asked them why they said I was penurious, and they would use it for the sphere (405). The world that the editors would use it for, however, was not the world that most concerned Dickinson. The ambition in her to go beyond the concerns of this world, to even, perhaps, achieve a fame beyond t his world, is but one of the more fascinating aspects of her. The mightiness of this woman, whose life appears so circumscribed, who could say, I feel the presence of that within me, unseen, only indescribably mighty, that can comprehend worlds systems of worlds yet cannot comprehend itself (241), is to be wondered at.is why it is odd to find a critic who would imagine that Dickinson possessed power in abundance but she confined it to the speaker of her verse (Bennett 43), so clearly does her power prove itself in all she does. Her originality caused William Dean Howells to welcome Dickinson as a distinctive addition to the literature of the world (Benfey 40). Emily Dickinson would not sell the substance of herself, her words. To her, her gift was greater than gold. When the world was ready for Dickinson the poet, it found her.

Extreme Weather Events In The Uk Environmental Sciences Essay

perfect Weather Events In The Uk environmental Sciences EssayIntro Global melting is an undisputable piss of climate change in which the major(ip)(ip) cause of climate change is mostly induced by humans (anthropogenic), and non simply by the essential course of nature. Water supply companies may increas e their water usage prices by at least 5 percent each year6 due to the drought and the ever increasing demand of water.Climate change and extreme weather layabout affect our health and make us to a greater extent persuasible to much more(prenominal) than illnesses than now and correct cause death. Examples of illness conditions are hay fever, cataracts and disrobe cancer. It could even cause occurrences of Dengue fever and watt Nile virus which are tropical diseases not normally found in the UK.7Temperature rises and heatwaves are becoming more frequent than usual. The Met Office conducted an interesting research which showed Englands highest temperature recorded in a day. One of the figures was particularly impinging which was found in Kent from the southern part of England. It revealed that Kent had the highest temperature recorded in January 2003 which was 17.6 degrees, and 38.6 degrees in August 2003 showing a shocking 21 degrees increase in just above 6 months.7 Such ex treme temperatures can present health problems to these vulnerable people. When exposed to heat eagle-eyed enough, Heat exhaustion may result to these people and possibly may head to dehydration and even heatstroke which is a manner grievous medical condition. Also, it will increase the amount of harmful UV radiation contacting our skins so increasing our skin cancer risk. Since Britain may experience further increase in temperatures in the near future, this problem require much attention. Moreover, the heatwaves may induce power cuts and increase water demand which will affect everyone including care people. Technology and water are in ever increasing demand therefore disabling the addressable technology around us due to power cuts, more droughts and increasing water bills may cause severe problems in our ability to cope without them at work and leisure. Also if trading structures are severely damaged, they may build a new building at another site which may approach more m oney than minor rep communication channel. Not only does it affect us humans, it affects plant and animal life too. More heatwaves and other severe weather conditions will increase the incidence of forest wildfires, contamination of river water and damage to habitats. This will harm the plant and animal wildlife and they may struggle to survive. It will ultimately lead to affecting our lifestyles in the long term.8Examples of damaging cases In the UK (England and Wales), floods that occurred at Autumn in the year 2000 among October to November have resulted in massive damages which have costed at least 1.3 billion.1 That autumn was the wettest autumn season ever recorded since 1766, demonstrating more than 500mm of rainfall between September to November, and insurance claims up to 3.5 billion were called for as a result of at least 10,000 flooded homes.1, 3 .Another case in the UK that is increasing even today is in the farming industry. Due to climate change, there is now a rapid developing of certain parasitic worms particularly the Helminth family that are affecting cattle and sheep livestock (affects both young and adult livestock). The most common Helminths are the roundworms (gastrointestinal nematodes) and the flatworms (flukes). The roundworms are thought to drastically reproduce far more quickly in higher temperatures and adapt very well to its surroundings due to its biotic potential and genetic diversity.9-10 This means that they can potentially thrive in all four seasons. Global Warming may increase mean daily temperatures and therefore cause a upsurge in the reproducing post of roundworms.9 A specific roundworm species called Teladorsagia grows really fast in the Spring and have been causing sullen damage to young lambs and even death in South East Scotland.10 There had been an outbreak in 2004 of another specific roundworm called Nematodirus battus, which have adapted to the Scottish weather so that they grow not only in Summer that also Autu mn and Winter. They have been seen in young and antiquated lambs.10Furthermore, the European heatwave that the UK experienced in August 2003 was the hottest heatwave ever recorded. Altogether in Europe, 20,000 people died because of the heatwave. Out of this, a minimum of 2,000 people from the UK died as a result of excessive heat. One third of the 2,000 deaths in the UK were associated with air pollution. It even affected roads, train services, water and energy suppliers plus farmers. 11 Not only that, home building foundations ( remit) were creation damaged due to the drying of water from the soil and building foundations causing cracks to form and non-level home foundations. The subsidence insurance claims soared up to 400 trillion. 12Vulnerability of certain people types In the UK, the magnitude of Heatwaves and wage hike sea levels (which may lead to larger wave heights, more floods and faster coastal erosion) are rising. Heatwave effects may be particularly significant in the South and East parts of the UK. These extreme weather conditions pose certain vulnerable individuals who2, 4have first income support They cannot afford to buy accessories and other essential items that may help against short term and long term extreme weather problems.live in low quality constructed houses (particularly more found in coastal regions)- buildings will trap the heat, making their homes hotter and more susceptible to weaker house foundations.are elderly or quite young -more susceptibility to disease due to weaker tolerant systems.have poor health due to illness may increase their chances of catching other major or minor diseases, especially in cities.are isolated from tender links finding environmental, social and emergency help may be harderlive near the coastal regions -particularly in the East part of England as these coast have low lying, soft sediment coasts that erode much more quicker.Who live in cities referred as urban heat islands, which means that urban areas produce more heat than countryside towns. Makes them more susceptible to illnesses and possibly cause city infrastructure problems.13Cause of severe climate change and recognition Many scientists agree that the major cause of the drastic climate change, global warming and extreme weather conditions are due to pollution mainly by certain human activities (anthropogenic) that emit atomic number 19house gases (nitrous oxide, water vapour, methane and carbon dioxide (carbonic acid gas)). Of course there are natural equilibriums such as the carbon rung, nitrogen cycle and the water cycle that tries to balance the levels of these gases. Also, the ozone floor (O3) helps protect us from the harmful UV radiation from the sun. still these natural equilibriums have been disturbed by human activities. So now temperatures and sea levels are rising (glaciers in the Antarctica are melting as proof). 14-20A few examples of the human activity that has damaged the natural cycles are 14-20the cutting of trees (deforestation) increases the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning of trees. Trees are important in the absorption of carbon dioxide and water from the environment using the process called photosynthesis to release oxygen (O2) to the environment.driving cars, buses and other transport (especially airplanes) build-up of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere. Accounts for 21% of the emission of greenhouse gases in the UK.industrial chilling towers- increases the amount of heated water into the atmosphere.use of fertilisers and pesticides for farming the ones that invert nitrogen increase the levels of nitrogen in the biosphere via contamination of water due to heavy rainfall. Therefore it affects humans, fish and animals. Accounts for 8% of the emission of greenhouse gases in the UK.Burning of fossil fuels done to produce energy. The biggest contributor in the UK of releasing greenhouse gases to the atmosphere (65%).aeros ols that contain CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) the CFCs are sent to the atmosphere in which the UV radiation frees the chlorine from the CFC. This chlorine damages the ozone (O3) layer in the atmosphere. Some may argue that natural causes are significant to the climate change effects. It is cognise that eruption of volcanoes, the output energy of the sun, ocean currents and Earths orbit changes do contribute to this but only influence a minor role.17,20Who can influence change? The UK Government can help with the temperance and alteration strategies for sustainability ontogeny which includes social, environmental and economic improvements. Mitigation is trying to reduce the levels of greenhouse gases in order to reduce the temperature rises. Adaptation have-to doe withs doing things differently in our lives to reduce the level of greenhouse gases. They must consult with other business leaders and organisations to ensure mitigation and adaptation strategies are implemented for sus tainability. It could help the UK unemployment issue whilst helping biodiversity. However, greener solutions may require lots of financial and political help to implement them, which is the challenge. They study to use short and long term strategies for success. What currently is happening and what extras can be done?A study found that capital of the United Kingdom was producing 44.71 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2008 from which major culprit the business workplaces contributed by a shocking 19.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide(43% of total). Also, homes and transport were emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide. The Mayor of Londons mitigation strategy to climate change is to dismount London CO2 levels by 60% for 2025. It is currently under public consultation but sounds promising. The mitigation programmes include REFIT, RECONNECT, RENEW, the Green500, Electric Vehicle Rollout and Operation Decentralised Energy. It will require installing new energy saving technology at businesses and homes, encouraging community to reduce CO2 levels, recycling waste into energy and get 1,000 electric vehicles and more. 21Advantages are that it explores different ways that can lend a change in CO2 levels so results can be seen relatively quick, it may lead many jobs in a variety of sectors for the unemployed as it is a concerning issue in the UK, the puke is easy to follow, helps people save more money in the long term.It may have problems with the project being expensive and refuelling electric or hydrogen fuelled vehicles as it may take longer.Overcoming resistance unavoidably more public sentiency about the benefits, business and public role models to show public being greener is possible, and easy. The Queen made a speech recently in which she utter that policies and legislations of the energy security and green economy Bill are to be introduced and implemented by the Government into homes and business across the UK. This will enable more use of energy ef ficient technology whilst ensuring management of energy supply to keep up with energy demand, reduce greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide, encourage people to coincide with the demands do by the Government, and fund more projects that help the economy whilst reducing greenhouse gases via the Green Investment Bank.22 This sounds like a good idea for mitigation and adaptation towards climate change. In the UK, Business and Government leaders like David Cameron need to encourage greener jobs for benefit of the environment, economy and society. Unemployment still is a big issue across the world. Many people including graduates are claiming unemployment benefits and are unable to find work due to the credit crunch. Women are especially finding it difficult. In March 2011, the number of men on the benefits are 988,200 whilst number of women are 462,300.23Recently, The Green Economy Council have fetched big business leaders (eg. Joe Greenwell, chairman of Ford UK) in its council to yield professional advice to the Government on policies that affect green business infrastructure, investment and regulation. They are setting up policies like Green Deal which may open a thousand new jobs. But policies need to be clearer on low carbon economy. 24-26They have not considered solar energy which has the potential to thrive. Mazhar Bari of SolarPrint said in 10 years, it could create 10,000 jobs, 1 billion of exports and 140 million of annual tax revenue.27 everyday Biodiversity awareness inescapably to be more focused in the UK particularly to the medium/low clique people due to low income. Certain celebrities can probably help with this. Solutions need to be easy, practical, involve little effort and cheap.Health adaptation policies look good like the Heatwave Plan, Climate Change routine 2008 and the Annual Public Health Report of the Director of Public Health 2010 have been introduced to help healthcare professionals and public adapt to climate change and help h ealth sector Government bodies and media to raise awareness of solutions. Also, diet and health advice to public is given by healthcare professionals. 28,29As far as farming is concerned in the UK, the Common Agricultural Policy needs to be reviewed again by DEFRA to coax the Government the benefits of the scheme.30Funding cuts to UK flood defence may have serious consequences as those seen in November 2010 at Cornwall where 5 million poor people were at risk from flood damage. I think round property insurance cover and belongings can help in advance of flooding pillowcase so that less money is spent in aid. 31Conclusion Much effort still needs to be done by everyone, although the Government and others have actively tried to reach sustainable development through mitigation and adaptive approaches. They seem to be in the correct frame of mind but farming and flood aid strategies still needs to be tackled.
